発表要旨: Terra cognita (known land) and terra incognita (unknown land) comprise a
fundamental dualism of how people relate to the physical world we live in.
Applied to tourism, they reflect the tensions between safety (psychocentric)
and risk (allocentric) in tourist motivations, assigning these to geographic
spaces of tourism and non-tourism phenomena. The result is a proposed model of
Tourism Incognita, that includes tourism cognita (consisting of terra domus, the
tourist’s home place, and terra viator, the travel industry space) and tourism
incognita (consisting of terra intimidus, places that tourists avoid, and terra
incognita, places that tourists do not know about). While all of these are
essential to the tourism, terrae incognitae play an especially important role
because of their ability stimulate our curiosity and lure us out of terra domus
and beyond terra viator in search of insight, discovery and exhilaration.
Examples of the various realms of tourism incognita will also be
presented.
